Choosing a Hajj and Umrah Operator: A Due-Diligence Checklist

What the service is

Hajj and Umrah operators arrange travel, accommodation and logistics for pilgrims. Hajj in Nigeria is regulated, so check an operator’s status first.

Questions to ask

  • Are you licensed or recognised by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for the relevant service?
  • What exactly does the price include, and what does it not include?
  • Where will we stay and how far is it from the Haram?
  • What is the refund policy if the trip is cancelled?
  • Can I speak to past pilgrims?

Typical process

  1. Compare at least three operators.
  2. Verify licences with the regulator.
  3. Get everything in writing.
  4. Pay by traceable bank transfer to a business account, never to a personal account.

Red flags

  • Pressure to pay immediately.
  • Prices far below the market.
  • No written contract.
  • Payment requested to a personal account.
