Jumu’ah: Etiquette and Sunnahs of Friday

What and when

Jumu’ah takes place every Friday at the time of Dhuhr.

The meaning of the verse: when the call to prayer is made on Friday, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. (Quran 62:9)

Sunnahs and etiquette

• Take a bath and wear clean clothes.
• Use perfume (for men) and miswak.
• Go early to the mosque.
• Listen quietly to the khutbah.
• Recite Surah al-Kahf, as reported in hadith (check grading and wording).
• Send more salawat upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Checklist

• Prepare your clothes on Thursday.
• Arrange work so you can attend.
• Bring children and teach them the manners.

Common questions

• Is Jumu’ah obligatory for women? Scholars say it is not obligatory for women, but they may attend.
• What if I arrive late? Pray with the imam and complete what you missed, according to your school.
