Job Scams: Red Flags Every Nigerian Jobseeker Should Know

Career Guidance

The challenge

Fake job adverts target graduates and those in a hurry. They often use real company names.

The Islamic principle

Honesty and the protection of wealth and dignity are part of the faith. Do not fall for deception and do not take part in it.

Red flags

  • Asking you to pay for a form, training, uniform or interview.
  • Offering a high salary with no experience needed.
  • Contacting you only by WhatsApp or a free email address.
  • Refusing a face-to-face or video interview.
  • Asking for bank details or ID before an offer.

Practical steps

  1. Search the company name and registration.
  2. Contact the company through its official website.
  3. Never pay to get a job.
  4. Tell a friend or family member before you go to an interview.
  5. Report suspicious adverts.

Checklist

  • Official email address
  • Office address you can verify
  • Written offer letter
