Overview and learning goals
- Define the main grades of hadith.
- Know who grades and why scholars sometimes differ.
- Learn practical rules for sharing hadith.
Key concepts
Sahih
A hadith with a continuous chain of reliable, precise narrators, free from hidden defects and contradictions.
Hasan
Similar to sahih but with a narrator whose precision is slightly lower.
Da’if
A hadith that misses one of the conditions of acceptance. Its weakness varies from slight to severe.
Who grades
Specialists in hadith sciences such as al-Bukhari, Muslim, at-Tirmidhi, al-Daraqutni and later scholars. Graders sometimes differ because they judge narrators or chains differently.
Common misunderstandings
- A weak hadith is not automatically fabricated.
- Different gradings do not mean the religion is confused: scholars give reasons and teach their methods.
Practical rules
- Share a hadith with its source and grading.
- Do not use a hadith you cannot verify.
- Ask a qualified teacher when a ruling depends on a disputed grading.
Quick self-check
- Who grades hadith? Specialist scholars of hadith.
- Is every da’if hadith fabricated? No.
