Overview and learning goals

  • Understand why wudu (ablution) is required before prayer.
  • Learn the steps in the usual order.
  • Know where the four main schools differ, and that this is normal.
  • Avoid common mistakes such as wasting water or missing spots.

Key concepts

What is wudu

Wudu is the washing of specific parts of the body with water, with the intention of worship, so that a Muslim can pray and perform other acts that require purity.

The Quranic basis

The meaning of the verse: believers, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your arms up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. (Quran 5:6)

The usual steps

  1. Make the intention in the heart and say Bismillah.
  2. Wash both hands up to the wrists.
  3. Rinse the mouth and clean the nose with water.
  4. Wash the face from hairline to chin and ear to ear.
  5. Wash the right arm then the left, including the elbows.
  6. Wipe the head with wet hands, and the ears.
  7. Wash the right foot then the left, including the ankles.

Where scholars differ

The four Sunni schools agree on the core acts the verse mentions, but differ on details such as whether the intention, the order of the steps and the washing of the mouth and nose are obligatory or recommended. Follow the position taught by your own teacher or local scholars. If you travel or have a specific case, ask a qualified scholar.

Common misunderstandings

  • More water is better. The Sunnah teaches moderation; waste is discouraged even at a flowing river.
  • Skipping the heels or between the fingers. Make sure every part is reached.
  • Rushing. A calm, complete wudu is worth more than a fast one.

Quick self-check

  1. Name the four parts the Quran explicitly mentions in Surah al-Ma’idah, verse 6. Answer: the face, the arms to the elbows, the head, and the feet to the ankles.
  2. Is it recommended to use a lot of water? Answer: No. Use what is needed and avoid waste.
  3. Who should you ask about details your school treats differently? Answer: a qualified local scholar or your teacher.
